The Situation in Malawi

Malawi has a current population of 18 million people. It gained independence from Britain in 1964 and remains a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations.

Malawi Medical College graduate 20-50 doctors per year but the Government can only pay them around US$5000 per year.

Many graduates thus seek employment with some of the more affluent neighbouring countries within the African continent. Currently Malawi has only 2 doctors per 100,000 population whereas Australia has 374.
